Cleverly: I’m disappointed Froch doesn’t want to fight but I still want an elite fighter
There’s been plenty of talk surrounding a possible match up between WBO world light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and 2 time WBC world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch but for now the fight doesn’t seem close to happening.
There were fresh hopes for the all-Brit showdown after reports that American broadcasters Showtime rejected Froch as an opponent to IBF world super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute. However, via Twitter Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn was quick to state that it still wouldn’t be happening.
Let down that Nottingham’s Froch doesn’t want the fight, Cleverly wishes to stay respectful to Froch. He said, “I suppose there are loads of other options for me. It’s pretty disappointing that we can’t get the fight on because it would be a great fight for the public. There’d be 2 warriors fighting and it would be an exciting fight, I know it would be. It’s disappointing but it’s no big problem because there are plenty of other big fights for us to pursue.”
“He can definitely take the fight when he wants to. He can move up a weight division and try to become a 2 weight world champion – not many fighters would turn down that offer. The offers there for him, it’s a great offer and the fight would be a great sell, I’ve got no doubt about that but they’re deciding against it and that’s their problem.”
While leaving an open invitation to Froch to fight in the future, Cleverly still dreams of securing a big fight with other elite names and the future occasion is one that he relishes.
Cleverly commented, “That would be special because that would be a major event for Wales – an event which we haven’t had for 4 years now. For me to bring that back with a massive fight against an elite fighter… that’s going to be awesome for everyone involved!”
Before he can plan a big event he dreams of Cleverly isn’t forgetting that he must first focus on American Tommy Karpency who he’ll fight at the Motorpoint (former C.I.A.) Arena on February 25th.
“Hopefully I’ll win this fight and I can look forward to a big showdown in the summer against 1 of the elite fighters. I can afford no slip ups against Karpency. He has nothing to lose so he’s going to be very dangerous and he’s very tough, tall, strong and big. This is another world title fight for me where I have to be switched on and keep the chance of a big showdown with someone in the summer alive.”
