Police called to Press Conference
Police were called to calm down the latest instalment of drama between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew as the two light-heavyweights took part in the final press conference before they clash in the ring on October 15th in Liverpool’s Echo Arena.
Surprisingly it wasn’t either boxer involved in this incident. Both were conducting one-to-one interviews when Cleverly’s father and trainer, Vince Cleverly, reacted angrily to insults from Bellew’s entourage. Similar insults were also made at the London and Liverpool press conferences.
With no security present at the Marriot Hotel venue in Cardiff City Centre, hotel staff called police to diffuse the situation before it escalated further. Frank Warren Promotions media representative and host, Richard Maynard commented “Police were called to diffuse the situation and calm was quickly restored. Both boxers are now looking forward to finally settling their differences in the ring on October 15th.”
Cleverly Jr was as shocked as anyone to witness the scenes and Nathan said, “I was a bit taken aback by what was happening and tried to keep focused on my interview.”
“I didn’t see what happened to make my dad go off like that, but he’s a passionate person and he probably got a bit over excited,”
“You’d expect this sort of stuff to happen at an American press conference with Floyd Mayweather’s dad or something, but not in Cardiff”
“Bellew could cause trouble in an empty room, but he’s got a whole lot of trouble with me on October 15th now.”
The scuffle was all the more surprising because it followed what was a good natured and respectful press conference, especially when compared to previous meetings.
During the questions Vince Cleverly commented, “Nathan has a lot of respect for Tony Bellew. Tony is a very good boxer indeed. It’s going to be a very good fight but at the end of the day, class is going to show through.”
While at times some people have accused Bellew of going over the top in his insults, it seems the needle has peaked because he was full of respect in Cardiff. He stated, “Understand this, I’ve got respect for him. The kid is an intelligent lad and he comes from a nice place, I’ve got respect for him. I’ll shake his hand before or after, that’s not what it’s about.”
Bellew also added, “Regardless of result, I will walk over and shake his hand. If it happens that it will be raised, I’ll raise it for him myself. I’m a man at the end of the day.”
It isn’t the first time the two camps have clashed at press conferences. There was an infamous live press conferences in May when Bellew replaced no show opponent, Juergen Braehmer. Although Bellew was stopped from boxing because of fears over him safely making the weight at such short notice, he did manage to call Cleverly a “f*****g rat” live on Sky Sports News to shock sports fans.
